A man was fatally shot during an encounter with Jersey City police early Tuesday, Oct. 21, authorities said.

Officers from the Jersey City Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit encountered the man in the area of Bergen and Virginia avenues shortly after 1 a.m., according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.

Gunfire was exchanged and the civilian was struck, the office said in a statement.

A gun was recovered at the scene. The wounded man was given emergency medical aid before being taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:44 a.m., according to the Attorney General’s Office.

The investigation remains ongoing. The identities of the man and the involved officer have not been released.

Under a 2019 state law, the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate all deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. The findings will be presented to a grand jury to determine if charges are warranted.
