LG&E and KU customers in Kentucky could see their monthly utility bills rise if a proposed rate increase is approved by the Kentucky Public Service Commission.

KU electric customers will see an increase of $9. LG&E residential customers will see a $5 increase for electric and an $8 increase for gas.

LG&E and KU spokesperson Liz Pratt said it has been five years since rates have increased, and during that time, inflation has gone up nearly 20%. The company stated that in order to keep up with improvement projects, rates have to go up.

"This increase will allow us to continue to harden our system against the more frequent and severe storms we're experiencing in Kentucky. It also allows us to do additional safety and integrity programs for our gas system," said Pratt.
