Meaning behind the masks: Kraken goalies talk design, details

SEATTLE — For Seattle Kraken goaltenders, protecting the net is both a job and a canvas.

Each Kraken goalie wears a uniquely customized mask that tells a story blending personal passions, regional pride and bold style. For Joey Daccord, it’s one of the best parts of the position.

“It’s honestly one of the coolest parts of playing goalie,” Daccord said.

Daccord works with artist Shifty, based in Arizona, to design his helmets which range from glow-in-the-dark designs to nods to his favorite mascot.

“I told him for this one I wanted big S’s that float in the dark,” Daccord said. “For this one, I said I wanted similar to last year... some mountains and stuff on it and I wanted the big, you know, Kraken on the side. The rest he kind of comes up with on his own, and he does an incredible jo
