Tropical Storm Melissa has begun to slow its progress in the Caribbean but is still forecast to intensity into a hurricane and threaten Haiti and Jamaica later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

In its 5 a.m. advisory Wednesday, Melissa had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was located about 305 miles south-southwest of Port au Prince, Haiti, moving west-northwest at 7 mph.

“A decrease in forward speed and a gradual turn to the northwest and north-northwest is expected during the next few days,” forecasters said. “On the forecast track, Melissa is expected to approach Jamaica and the southwestern portion of Haiti later this week.”
