ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Potential changes could come to Abilene restaurants after a change in how the state handles food truck permits was passed.

Effective July 1, 2026, food trucks will obtain permits through the state rather than cities, which means that cities could lose revenue. In the Key City, that revenue is estimated to be $34,500, according to the City of Abilene.

To combat the loss, the council is considering increasing fees for food establishments' inspections and permits. The recommended increase is 10%, so the city can make up the loss of profit. This would also affect nonprofits and schools with inspection pricing.

Deepak Mizar, owner of Little Italy Pizza and Pasta, told KTAB/KRBC that his restaurant has increased prices since the pandemic.
