NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The City of Newport News is doing its part to bring more housing to the city. On Thursday morning, state, local, and federal leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Shipyard Flats, a new apartment building on Washington Avenue.

The project, funded by state and federal historic tax credits, is worth $24.5 million.

Mayor Phillip Jones said the development marks a major step in reviving the city.

"This is just the first step. There is a lot of land and a lot of property that we have here in downtown Newport News, and we're so excited to have great partners at the state, but also with [real estate developer] Monument."
