The Victoria Police Department has launched a novel program as a way to shore up staffing, primarily in its frontline roles.

On Thursday, VicPD officially launched a “temporary member program” which will allow recently retired, or soon-to-be retired, members a chance to return to service in a limited capacity.

The goal is to help fill vacancies in the police department, particularly among its frontline units, and to open up mentorship opportunities for members based on the experience of veteran officers.

“Like many police services across Canada, we are facing significant recruitment and retention challenges,” said VicPD Chief Fiona Wilson at a press conference Thursday.
