Retired officers will be hired back into service by the Victoria Police Department as a temporary measure to meet staffing needs, says the new police chief.
“This program will allow VicPD, when necessary, to temporarily employ recently retired certified police officers for fixed terms up to three years,” Victoria Police Chief Fiona Wilson said Thursday. “We are open for applications as of today.”
She said the first of the officers could be working within weeks and will be assigned to front line roles, primarily in patrol, where the demand is greatest.
They are not a replacement for permanent hiring, said Wilson, adding the measure is designed to help maintain public safety and service levels while long-term recruitment efforts continue.
