SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah's Hogle Zoo has announced that Diego, a California sea lion, passed away on Wednesday.

According to the Hogle Zoo, Diego was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in 2024. Following his diagnosis, Diego worked with a team to receive treatments. Some of the treatments included laser therapy, medications, training adjustments, and habitat evaluations.

On Monday, the Hogle Zoo shared that Diego had a sudden decrease in his appetite and behavior. Despite focused care and treatment, Diego's condition was not improving. The animal care and veterinary teams made the hard decision to euthanize Diego.
