When attending farmers markets, or on the streets of our town, you will find lots of winter squash. The winter squash is grown until their ripe fruit has a hard rind and mature seeds inside. When you try to cut open many squashes, you will find that the rind is so hard, you have a lot of trouble slicing it open. When this occurs, just put it in the microwave and check every 30 seconds to see when it is soft enough to cut into. If you do not have a microwave, you can do the same by heating your oven and putting the winter squash inside and checking it often to see when you can slice it open. Most people do not consider pumpkin as a type of squash, but what we commonly call a pumpkin is often just round, orange winter squash. Most squashes can be used for decoration and food.
