AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Hindus around the world celebrated Diwali on Saturday, known as the festival of lights and marking the new year in India.
Families gather for prayer and blessing food before feasting, bringing light into their homes with lamps as part of the celebration. In Agawam, families visited a local Hindu temple to participate in the festivities, with some traveling from Connecticut to join the celebration.
"It's all about family, unity, and harmony," said Janki Patel, highlighting the cultural significance of Diwali.
During the prayer, men and women sit separately, and shoes are removed before entering the room, adhering to Hindu cultural practices. Women dress in their finest traditional clothing for the occasion, adding to the vibrant and colorful atmosphere of Diwali.
