The Michigan State Spartans lost their fifth straight game on Saturday, dropping their annual rivalry matchup with Michigan, 31-20 .

The loss extended the Spartans’ losing streak to the Wolverines to four straight games and has MSU with a 3-5 record and 0-5 mark in Big Ten play.

MSU’s defense put together an improved performance after being torched by Indiana in the prior week, but still only recorded a 58.2 overall defensive grade on Pro Football Focus, the third-worst mark of the season.

It was the offense that sputtered from the jump and could never fully get into rhythm. Led by quarterback Aidan Chiles, MSU managed to amass 305 total yards, but did so with inconsistency and with the unit called for nine penalties throughout the matchup that constantly hindered their progress.
