CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A deputy was injured and a man was shot and killed during a welfare check at a home in Cherokee County on Saturday evening, the sheriff's office said, before the mother of the man was discovered dead inside the home.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home on Whisperwood Trail where they encountered an armed man who was "subsequently shot and killed outside the residence by deputies."

It was unclear what fully transpired between the man and deputies. The sheriff's office said a deputy was injured in the altercation and taken to Wellstar Kennestone, where he was treated and released.

After the shooting, the sheriff's office said deputies "could smell an odor of decay" and they found a "deceased adult female inside the home."
