Australians could face higher airfares as a result of a coordinated push towards net zero emissions.

The revelation has led to Nationals Senator Matt Canavan warning plane travel will be only for the “very, very rich” in the future.

The airline industry has been working toward streamlining passenger check-ins and comfortable cabins , but major changes are also on the horizon for the cost of air travel.

Last week, the International Air Transport Association’s world sustainability symposium in Hong Kong heard travellers could pay an extra $1,350 on average for a plane ticket by 2050.

This equates to an approximate ticket increase of $54 year on year.
