Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has formally recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor, sending his proposal to the Union Law Ministry ahead of his retirement on November 23.

Justice Surya Kant, currently serving as a judge of the Supreme Court, was elevated to the apex court on May 24, 2019. Upon assuming office, he will serve as the Chief Justice of India for a tenure exceeding 14 months, until his retirement on February 9, 2027.

Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Kant comes from a middle-class family. He completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981 and earned his Bachelor’s degree in law from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.
