A man in his 50s has tragically died following a collision on the M6 motorway, where a car was reported driving the wrong way. The incident occurred on the southbound carriageway near Charnock Richard services at approximately 9:33pm on Sunday night. Lancashire Police received multiple reports of a Vauxhall Astra travelling against the flow of traffic shortly before the crash. Minutes later, the Astra collided with a Toyota Corolla, resulting in the fatality. The driver of the Astra was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver and passenger of the Corolla, both men in their 40s, were taken to hospital with serious injuries and remain under medical care. In the aftermath of the collision, the southbound side of the motorway has been closed, causing significant traffic delays. Diversion routes have been established, but motorists on the northbound side are also experiencing delays of over two hours due to two lanes being shut. An investigation is currently underway, with police conducting enquiries at the scene. Officers are particularly interested in speaking to witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident. They also believe the Astra may have been involved in a separate damage-only collision on Blackpool Road in Preston around 9:15pm, just prior to the M6 crash. Sgt Rebecca Price from the Road Policing Unit stated, "A man has sadly died in this collision, and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time. Our investigation is very much in its early stages, and we are conducting a number of enquiries, some of which will require assistance from the public." She urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the incident, emphasising the impact on those affected. Anyone with information or relevant footage is encouraged to contact the police by calling 101 or emailing, quoting log 1162 of 26th October.
