Two-year-old Awaab Ishak should still be alive today. Instead, he died breathing in mould in a home his parents had begged their landlord to repair.
Today, a law bearing his name comes into force. Awaab’s Law, born from unbearable tragedy, will require social landlords to act within fixed timescales when significant hazards are reported. This is the start of a phased implementation.
Phase one covers significant hazards caused by damp and mould, as well as all other emergencies . Later phases will extend those protections to other hazards (including falls, fire, and excessive cold or heat) where they present a significant risk of harm.
I represented Awaab’s parents at the inquest in 2022. The facts were devastating: a home deemed “unfit for human habitation”, repeated warnings ignored,
