A man charged in the 2021 killing of a Hollywood Police officer abruptly pleaded guilty to murder and other charges Monday amid jury selection in his trial.
Jason Banegas, 22, pleaded guilty to 10 different charges including first-degree murder in the October 2021 killing of Officer Yandy Chirino. Hollywood Police Department
Banegas entered the plea on the fifth day of jury selection in his criminal trial, which is no longer necessary.
But jury selection for the penalty phase, which was expected to begin in mid-November, will proceed.
Banegas could receive the death penalty, and the minimum sentence he faces is life in prison.
