Half of British Columbians who voted for the B.C. Conservative Party a year ago say they want embattled leader John Rustad to step down, found a new poll.

According to the self-commissioned Angus Reid Institute poll, released Sunday, 48 per cent of respondents who voted for the party in the provincial elections last October said Rustad, who is facing defections and infighting within his party, should resign.

Support for Rustad among Conservative voters has waned since the last election. Only 52 per cent of party supporters had a favourable view of Rustad, down from about 80 per cent during the election campaign, said the poll.

Among the public, the poll found 59 per cent of respondents want Rustad out.
