SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Louisiana is introducing a new law restricting cellphone use when driving. Handsfree use of your cellphone is now required.

In a law signed by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry on Aug. 1, driving with use of phones and related electronics was banned.

State Representative Joy Walters deems the law necessary for the safety of our community.

“We are trying to prohibit car crashes, keep our people safe, keep our children safe. Children have been hit on the way to school, getting off the bus, etc. because drivers have phones in their hands,” Walters said.

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Louisiana drivers will be fined for holding or physically supporting a cell phone while operating a moving vehicle. Fines are even higher if the distracted driver is in an accident.
