FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) -- An uptick of RSV cases has prompted McLeod Regional Medical Center to limit visitation to its neonatal unit and newborn nursery on its Florence campus.

The areas "are restricted to individuals under age 12," the hospital said Monday in a Facebook post.

RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, coldlike symptoms, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Infants and adults who are older or have certain risk factors are more likely to develop severe RSV and need hospitalization.

The CDC recommends immunizations to protect infants, some young children, and adults who are older or have certain risk factors that increase the risk for severe RSV.
