KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The murder trial of a man accused of a woman’s death in Kanawha County got underway on Monday, according to the county Prosecutor’s Office.
Opening statements were made, and the prosecution started presenting its case against Michael Smith.
In April 2021, Kanawha County Sheriff’s deputies said Cheyenne Johnson, who was from Jackson County, West Virginia, was found dead in the Sissonville area.
Smith was later arrested. Deputies said he told them he shot and killed Johnson, then dumped her body in a deep water well on his girlfriend’s property.
Deputies said their investigation led them to believe it was Smith’s girlfriend, Virginia Smith, who pulled the trigger. She pleaded guilty to identical charges two years ago.
