SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

As the federal government shutdown continues, millions of Californians could soon be impacted by cuts to food assistance and food banks are expected to see an influx of demand.

CalFresh in California, which is also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), helps more than 5.5 million people throughout the state.

CalFresh funding has been available for benefits in October and people can still use their EBT cards with existing benefits . But big shutdown impacts are ahead.

Carlos Marquez III, the executive director of the County Welfare Directors Association of California, said people will not receive assistance for the month of November unless there is a drastic change in federal funding.
