A Toronto organization is offering to send aid to Jamaica to help with relief efforts if Hurricane Melissa devastates the Caribbean island.
Rahul Singh, executive director of GlobalMedic, a Canadian charity based in Etobicoke, said the organization has told the Jamaican government that it can send water purification units, drones and family emergency kits if needed.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center as of 5 p.m. ET Monday, the core of Melissa is expected to move near or over Jamaica late Monday night and early Tuesday, across southeastern Cuba Tuesday night and across southeastern or central Bahamas on Wednesday.
As a Category 5 hurricane, Melissa would be the strongest hurricane to hit the island since record-keeping began in 1851.
"Everything is on standby," Singh said.
