JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KY3) -The clock is ticking for those with food stamps; federal food benefits are expected to run out this Saturday.
Meanwhile, Missouri’s governor recommends that those on food stamps turn to food pantries for help.
Because of the ongoing federal government shutdown, over 667,000 Missourians may lose SNAP benefits, that is in addition to the 56,000 Missourians who work for the federal government and may not receive a paycheck this week.
This is not somewhere the state government usually steps in, as Ranking Member of the Budget Committee Rep. Betsy Fogle explains.
In order to invest the $1.5 billion needed to back-fund SNAP for Missourians, Gov. Mike Kehoe would have to call lawmakers back for a special session to reconfigure the budget.
