Little Compton Town Council members gave their unanimous support Thursday to a homestead exemption plan that, its authors hope, will help those who need it most. Now it’s up to the state, and voters at next year’s Financial Town Meeting, to decide whether it should become law.

Though Town Solicitor Anthony DeSisto joked last week that the proposal is probably “the most complicated homestead exemption in the state,” it is simple in some respects:

If passed into law, qualifying Little Compton residents who are registered to vote in town and own homes would be exempted from a portion of the property taxes they would otherwise pay.
