BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) - The United States Department of Agriculture announced on Sunday that SNAP benefits would run dry on Nov. 1. With less than one week to prepare, food pantries are scrambling to meet an expected influx of needs.
The Haven of Rest in Bristol, Tennessee has served their community for well over 50 years, providing food, hot meals and clothing to those in need.
Executive Director Brian Plank said, just within the last week, the pantry has already seen an increase in need.
"We started seeing a real uptick in the number of people who are calling us for food," he said. "We're normally just booking out maybe one week ahead or something like that, but we're already about two weeks out, and every time slot we've got for people to come pick up food is full right now."
