Carlton premiership hero Brian Kekovich, older brother of North Melbourne legend Sam Kekovich, has died aged 79.

Carlton historian Tony De Bolfo shared the news of Kekovich’s sad passing on Tuesday afternoon.

“To the memory of Brian Kekovich — hero of Carlton’s drought-breaking 1968 grand final victory with four goals of seven up front against Essendon,” De Bolfo said.

Kekovich played 34 games for the Blues in 1967 and 1968 and was their leading goal-kicker in both seasons.

He kicked 97 majors in total, including 4.4 in the premiership victory, which would be his final game before a back injury derailed his promising career.

Still only 22 at the time, Kekovich was medically advised to retire immediately, or risk becoming paralysed for life.
