(KRON) -- A Day of the Dead event at Berkeley High School was canceled last weekend due to fears over immigration enforcement, while Oakland is proceeding with its celebration despite concerns.
The Berkeley event was canceled after vendors and families expressed concerns that ICE agents might appear, leading to a withdrawal of participation. In contrast, Oakland city leaders are moving forward with their Day of the Dead celebration, emphasizing community support and safety.
Adriana Betti, Executive Director of R.I.S.E, explained the decision to cancel the Berkeley event, stating, "It’s hard enough just to go to the grocery store, but to go to an event that, you know, they would target is hard."
