A woman has been arrested after allegedly sabotaging water and gas mains at two hospitals in what authorities say could have been a “catastrophic” attack.

Police allege the 42-year-old first entered Kareena Private Hospital on Kareena Rd in Caringbah, in Sydney’s south, about 12.20am on Tuesday, where she cut both the water and gas mains before activating fire hoses.

She then allegedly went to nearby Sutherland Hospital and switched off the gas main about 1.30am.

Sutherland Hospital was forced to switch to portable oxygen and air supplies after losing gas at 2am.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the systems were restored within two hours but warned the situation could have been disastrous.
