BENSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A man was hit and killed on the side of the highway after his car ended up in a ditch in Benson.

This happened just outside the town on Highway 50 Monday night.

NCSHP says an elderly couple attempted to turn around when their car ended up stuck in the ditch.

A tow truck driver arrived to help them so 70-year-old Thomas Brown started directing traffic around the car.

That's when someone driving by hit Brown, killing him.

The driver remained on the scene.

Police are investigating the incident.
