ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) - Hurricane Melissa hit southwestern Jamaica as a catastrophic Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 185mph and higher gusts. The storm has so far caused at least nine deaths - three apiece in Jamaica and Haiti, one in the Dominican Republic. Right now there are reports in Jamaica of heavy flooding and substantial wind damage countrywide. The center of the storm is approaching Cuba in the overnight tonight.
Meanwhile here in the Twin Tiers, high pressure stays with us through at least part of our day Wednesday. Look for mainly clear skies and seasonably cool temperatures in the low-50s.
