MINNEAPOLIS — As Hurricane Melissa slammed into Jamaica Tuesday, communities on the island’s western coast faced one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record. Thousands of miles away in Minnesota, Tomme Beevas watched anxiously, waiting for word from family members as he worked to organize help for his home country.
Beevas, owner of Pimento Jamaican Kitchen, has not heard from several relatives since the hurricane made landfall. "I literally haven't heard from my uncle all morning, and we were hearing from him on the regular, and the family is naturally concerned," Beevas said.
Despite the uncertainty, Beevas is channeling his anxiety into action. He has teamed up with the Jamaica Minnesota Organization and Galaxy Foods to send barrels of non-perishable food, baby supplies, and relief
