NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Ride inside, stay alive.
In an ongoing effort to thwart subway surfing, the MTA announced that anti-surfing barriers are being installed on every No. 7 train.
A prototype was first installed on a No. 7 train car in January 2025. Following a successful test, a second version was designed to comply with New York City Transit standards and requirements.
The MTA estimates that the installation on the entire line is expected to be completed in 2026.
Depending on the effectiveness of the barriers, the MTA will consider installing the barriers on trains along the J and No. 6 lines.
The agency estimates the pilot will cost around $10 million.
