CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — All eyes are on the Caribbean as Hurricane Melissa brings deadly destruction to several island nations, including Jamaica.

For parishioners at Holy Apostles Church in Cranston, the storm hits close to home.

Since 2008, members of the church have traveled to Montego Bay on annual mission trips to volunteer at Blessed Assurance orphanage, which helps dozens of children and adults with disabilities.

“They find a way to strive through everything they've already had to deal with," said Diego Alvarez, 21, who went on the trip for the first time this year. "I can't imagine they won't do the same here again.”
