Smiley Bradford becoming Purdue football's steady option at safety

WEST LAFAYETTE — The origin of Purdue football safety Smiley Bradford ’s first name requires no guesswork.

If you assumed that’s not his given name, you’re correct. His parents still call him “LeonTre” or “Tre.” But the nickname is not a family tradition, and it’s not in the least bit ironic.

“When I first started playing, I didn’t do anything but just smile,” Bradford said.
