AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - Gov. Janet Mills has announced $1.25 million for food pantries and anti-hunger programs in Maine as the government shutdown continues.

Mills says $1 million will be used from the Governor’s contingency account and $250,000 from the John T. Gorman Foundation.

Good Shepherd Food Bank will receive $650,000 to support local food panties and $600,000 will provide funds for AgeWise Maine, the state association for Maine’s Area Agencies on Aging.

An additional $10,000 will be directed to the Hunters for the Hungry program which helps with processing costs for game processing businesses for donated bear, deer, and moose.

The funding come as the USDA will not distribute SNAP benefits on November 1 due to the government shutdown.
