SUMTER, S.C. — A legal dispute is unfolding over a veteran organization in Sumter County once known for its fairs and community outreach.

The American Legion Post 15 has had its charter revoked by the South Carolina chapter of the organization, and the issue is now being addressed in the courts.

The American Legion Department of South Carolina, the state agency for the Legion, has filed a lawsuit against American Legion Post 15. In the suit, the state agency claims there has been infighting among the Sumter post’s leadership, making it difficult to determine who was leading the group.

The department revoked the group’s charter on Aug. 13, but now states that the local post is not granting them access to the property that Post 15 controls in Sumter County. The state office also claims
