Approximately £240 million in energy credit remains in closed account balances and could be reclaimed by consumers, according to the UK's energy watchdog. Ofgem and trade association Energy UK are urging people who may be owed money to contact their former supplier.
Data reveals that 1.9 million closed accounts contain credit, averaging around £126 per account. Consumers who have relocated in the past five years may have funds remaining in their accounts, but these could not be refunded because their contact details had not been updated.
More than 90% of closed account balances are returned automatically and suppliers will always attempt to ensure outstanding credit is refunded, according to Energy UK. People are being encouraged to check letters and emails for final bills and contact th
