A jury will be deciding this week if a 71-year-old Killeen man assaulted his neighbors on Old Florence Road in 2021, or if he fired his gun in self defense.

The defendant, Gerald Helmandollar, was indicted by a Bell County grand jury on Sept. 15, 2021, on two second-degree felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to an arrest affidavit, Helmandollar told police that he thought the husband and wife, neighbors with whom he was having a dispute, were about to attack him.

Jury selection began on Monday in the 478th Judicial District Court, according to the district attorney’s office.

Helmandollar was released from law enforcement custody after posting a bond of $250,000, on July 26, 2021.
