BELTON — A Killeen man who is accused of shooting a woman and hitting her husband with his pickup truck during an incident on Old Florence Road in 2021, is making a self-defense case as he faces a jury this week. However, one of the state’s first witnesses said that Gerald Helmandollar, the defendant, appeared to have been unprovoked when he opened fire on the septuagenarian couple. Helmandollar was indicted by a Bell County grand jury on Sept. 15, 2021, on two second-degree felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was released from the Bell County Jail after posting a bond of $250,000, on July 26, 2021.
The bespectacled 71-year-old was dressed in a dark blue suit for the start of the evidence portion of the trial on Tuesday morning.
