LITTLE RIVER, S.C. — A 150-year-old church in Little River is fighting a proposed highway route that would run directly through the historic building and its cemetery.

Mount Calvary Baptist Church #2 sits in the path of “Alternate Four,” one of the potential routes for a Highway 31 expansion being studied by the South Carolina and North Carolina transportation departments.

Pace slows for new measles cases in South Carolina outbreak

The S.C. Department of Public Health said Tuesday it has seen no new cases since Friday. That’s a change from last week's pace.

The route is favored by the agencies as a way to alleviate traffic congestion.

“I feel like there’s another way to do this besides coming through here, taking out our church and our cemetery,” said Priscilla Maye, a church member.
