Several cars came to a sudden halt after being 'damaged' by a sinkhole on the M62 .

The sinkhole opened up on the eastbound carriageway near Birch services, between junctions 18 at Simister Island and 19 at Heywood .

Highways officers were called out to the scene on Tuesday evening (November 4) after the sinkhole opened suddenly in the second lane.

At least eight cars were seen stopped at the side of the exit slip road for junction 19 with their hazard lights on, having been moved from the area.

Greater Manchester Police says officers supported National Highways at the scene, moving broken down cars from the carriageway.

Traffic officers were seen placing cones to keep traffic out of the first two lanes of the M62
