VALDESE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- An investigation is underway in Valdese after human skeletal remains were discovered by workers removing debris from a culvert, authorities said.

The Valdese Police Department said just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, officers were called to the intersection of Praley Street SW and Massel Avenue SW.

As officers arrived at the scene, they spoke with several Debris Tech employees who were working in the area, removing debris from a culvert, when they came upon the remains.

The Medical Examiner's Office was called and confirmed the remains were human. Valdese Police said due to daylight restrictions and the "meticulous nature" of processing skeletal remains, the scene was secured overnight until the sun came up on Wednesday.
