A thief in a terrifying clown mask knocked on a pensioner's door before stealing items from her home.

Police say the woman answered the door to a man, who is believed to have been donning a clown outfit.

He asked for a drink and then followed the woman into her home.

The thief pinched 'several items' before running from the scene.

He made off with a red purse which contained a wedding ring which had belonged to the pensioner's mother.

The ring is 'of extremely sentimental value', police said.

It is believed the perpetrator may have discarded this once he left the woman's home.

He went on to use one of her cards at a shop later that evening. a drink before following the woman into her home.
