Saugeen Shores Mayor Like Charbonneau will not use his new power to veto council amendments to the budget and will begin Nov. 12 debate on the draft 2026 Business Plan and Budget much like previous years – with council cooperation to ask taxpayers for as little as necessary.
Ontario’s Strong Mayor Powers gave mayors significant budget control, including the ability to propose the budget and veto council amendments to it, though the council can override the veto with a two-thirds vote.

“Under the law, I have to introduce the budget … but the budget I will table was created in exactly the same way as past budgets by the administration,” Charbonneau said in a Nov. 4 telephone interview.
