SUMTER, S.C. —

A student in South Carolina was detained after a metal detector alarm was triggered by something in a bookbag, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say a 16-year-old student at Lakewood High School was going through the metal detector on Monday when the alarm was triggered.

They said they found a BB gun in the student's bookbag.

The student was detained by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer and later released to the student’s mother.

The case will be petitioned to Sumter County Family Court.
