Canadian military personnel have been deployed to Jamaica as part of Canada’s contribution to international relief efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that struck the island on Oct. 28. The storm killed at least 32 people in Jamaica and caused widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure, and power systems across the country.
The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) confirmed on Nov. 2 that Canada had deployed a small military team to Jamaica to assist with recovery operations. The team will work alongside the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) to coordinate aid delivery and logistical support from an Operational Support Hub being set up at Kingston Airport.
