A legal resident but noncitizen immigrant who was reelected mayor of his small Kansas town has illegally voted in multiple elections, prosecutors allege.
Jose Ceballos, age 54, of Coldwater, faces three counts of voting without being qualified and three counts of election perjury. The charges, all of which are felonies, were filed Nov. 4 in Comanche County District Court .
That same day, Ceballos, who goes by Joe, was reelected mayor of Coldwater.
Attorney General Kris Kobach and Secretary of State Scott Schwab announced the prosecution at a Nov. 5 press conference in Topeka. The state's top prosecutor and top election official, both of whom are Republicans, declined to say how the case was found.
Court records did not immediately list a defense attorney for Ceballos.
