CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia has now released more than $11 million to food banks to prepare for increased demand due to the federal government shutdown, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Thursday. An additional $2.5 million was released, bringing the total amount provided to $11.1 million.

Morrisey has authorized up to $14.1 million to be released as West Virginians go without their SNAP benefits. Should the government shutdown continue, Morrisey has said he “will not hesitate to call in the legislature to get additional funding.”

“Every day we’re looking at the situation closely,” Morrisey said. “At this time, it was prudent to send another infusion to the food banks so that they stay ahead of the demand. We’re going to keep working to ensure that no one goes hungry.”
